Installation Instructions
Performing the Upgrade
Once you have backed up your data you are ready to perform the
firmware upgrade. You will need a CompactFlash memory card of at least
32 megabytes to perform this upgrade and the upgrade file. The upgrade
itself may be supplied to you on a CompactFlash* card or you may have
downloaded it from the Internet. If you downloaded it from the
internet you will need to unzip the file before it can be used. The
CompactFlash memory card will need to contain the xip.bin file at the
root of the card to be recognized by the upgrade boot loader. If you
have problems reading the data you may need to erase the card and
ensure that this file is the first one copied to the card. The
CompactFlash memory card must also be formatted in FAT (also known as
FAT16). FAT32 will not be recognized.
* A Compact Flash card goes in the back slot
(where the GPS or BT card usually resides). An SD (Secure Digital)
card will not work for ROM upgrades.
In addition you should ensure that the battery on
your WayPoint unit is charged up so that you won’t encounter
power problems during the upgrade process. For extra insurance you can
insert the unit to the charging cradle after the upgrade begins. The
CompactFlash card can be inserted before the upgrade procedure or when
prompted on the screen as part of the procedure. Read the following
instruction through before beginning and then follow them step by
step.
The process starts with a hard reset of
the device and then a special key sequence is used to enter the e-boot
mode. E-boot mode will request the CompactFlash card you have prepared
and then load it into RAM to verify the file contents. Once this is
verified the RAM copy will be used to burn the ROM with the new
upgrade. A second hard reset will be used to exit the e-boot loader
and initiate the new ROM. You can now proceed with the standard setup
steps you performed when you first got the unit. You can restore your
backup at any time you wish after these steps.
1. Remove the battery. and use the
stylus to turn off the power and then back on. (Hard reset)
2. Depress the voice memo button on the side of the unit.
3. While holding the button down, reinsert the battery and back
cover.
4. Continue to hold the button down and look at the screen side - The
top banner should show “E-boot” after a short period.
5. Let go of the Voice Memo button.
6. The screen will prompt for the CF card. Insert it now if not
already done. Wait for the upgrade to finish.
7. Repeat step 1.
8. Reinsert the battery and battery cover. After a few seconds the
standard WayPoint start screen should appear.
9. Follow the on screen instructions to set up your WayPoint.
After the firmware is installed you
can reload backups or software as needed
History of ROM Changes
02/04/2007 Adds DST date changes caused by Congress changing the start and stop days of DST. After the ROM is installed and the reboot completed please change the clock to visiting time and then change it back to Home time to trigger the time zone code to update the DST data.
09/25/2006 Removes the Text to speech processor due to ROM overload (this is available as a separte download). This release adds 8 more Meg of free RAM memory. It also upgrades Memory-map to version 5.1.3 and MS Reader to version 1.4.2. The new MS reader supports zooming images (tap and hold on an image) and can use landscape mode if you use a third party program like NYDITOT.
04/14/2006 Adds preloaded Gismo backup, a demo version of Memory-map and upgraded maploader. This version of Maploader (available separately) is needed to support V 2.0 Maps
09/14/2005 Major upgrade adds all the changes
listed below: (Note a new manual in PDF format should be downloaded to
match this release.)
1. Making a Bluetooth connection to the GPS will now launch WayPoint.
2. You can now set up Proximity alarms for POI's in a given category of your own choosing.
3. You can now optionally use the Text to Speech capability to announce street names while navigating.
4. You can now use other voices for navigation (requires a separate download)
5. You can now have other languages. Spanish is available for download.
6. The map chooser has been enhanced to permit selection of specific maps from multiple directories instead of the old one directory or all directory approach. This allows you to manage your maps better.
7. The number of maps you can have open at once has been increased, but for performance reasons it is still better to only have the maps open that you actually need.
8. Log file can now be up to 256K.
9. You can now customize the navigation banner display by selecting a larger or smaller amount of information. This can be done on the fly by just pressing the D-pad.
10. You now have more control over what screen is to be displayed after a route calculation is completed.
11. You now have more control over the text sizes available on the map data.
12. You can now have the backlight off and have it turn on automatically to alert you to an upcoming turn.
13. Recalling a saved route now checks that the correct maps are loaded.
14. Several messages were improved to make them clearer.
15. All Major roads can now be selected independently from detailed maps.
16. Navigation turn pane is more readable.
17. Many bug fixes making the software more robust.
07/12/2005 First version to support and include
the Maploader. Production release. Gismo shipped in ROM as a cab file
install. The paper manual supports this version but you need a
supplement for the Maploader.
