SHARING POIs

No matter how complete the POI database is there are times when you want more. This article shows how to share the POIs you have collected with other WayPoint users. It also discusses how you can import POIs.

Exporting your POI database

Other WayPoint users can use your POI database by simply providing them with a copy. The Landmarks1.mlp file contains the POI’s (saved locations) but if it is in the same directory as the maps the name can be anything you choose. The mlp extension much be used of course. The Landmarks file is chosen the same way that you would choose a map.

Be sure and remove any private entries before you send them your database. You can also exchange data in this fashion with Mapopolis users. If they have a Palm version you will need to change the extension.

Importing or building your POI database

The easiest way to add information to your Landmarks file is to simply go there and press the left button on your WayPoint for a couple of seconds. This will capture you current location. You can change the name to anything meaningful and you can add up to three lines of text although it is a good idea to reserve the first line for the address. A second may is to simply tap a place on the screen to capture its address and then tap and hold on the description to bring up a menu. One choice will be to add the location to your Landmarks file.

If you need to import files in other formats you may want to take a look at GPS Babel
(http://www.gpsbabel.org). They can convert many formats to ones that can be converted to WayPoint use. One exchange format has been defined in XML and is called GPX. This format is supported by many tools and is the favorite for Geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com). To get a file in Geocaching GPX format into your WayPoint download the converter from our web site. It is available as GPXtoMaplet.zip (http://www.mobilecrossing.com/downloads/GPXtoMaplet.zip)

There is a manual inside the zip file to get you going.
