Q. Can I use the 'y' adapter cable in the car?

A: No! The Y cable is just a wire and the 12 Volt cigarette lighter cable is just a wire. Attaching the 12 Volt cigarette lighter cable directly to the PDA will fry it! It will smoke. Do not do this! The car mount has a 12 V to 5 V converter inside the box to reduce the power to a suitable level for the PDA and for the GPS. Only 5 V can be used to power the PDA or the GPS. The cable running between the car mount and the Bluetooth GPS on units so equipped is 5 Volts.

Q. Does the WayPoint Bluetooth capability work with any Bluetooth cell phone?

A: The Bluetooth standard provides for several distinct protocols to be used to connect devices. To connect the WayPoint to the Internet via a cell phone requires that the phone support the DUN (Dial up network) protocol. Most cell phones do support this protocol although there may be a service charge for using it. Some phone companies, most notably Verizon, have chosen to not include this protocol on some of their equipment. Please check with your cell phone vendor before purchasing a Bluetooth phone to ensure that DUN is supported.

Without DUN support you will not be able to use your WayPoint to connect to the Internet via a Bluetooth. This will effect applications such as Pocket Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger, Weather Underground, TrafficWatch, and the Map Loader although these applications will continue to work in modes that do not require Bluetooth and a cell phone.

Q: Where can I download Region Maps for my WayPoint?

A: You may not need to download maps at all. If you use ActiveSync on a PC with an Internet connection you can use the built in MapLoader to retrieve and install the maps in one step. See the Map Loader manual, the chapter on Map Loader in the latest WayPoint Navigator manual, or the Map Loading QSG for more details.

If you need to download the maps, the Region Maps are available for download by visiting our online Map Store or by clicking on Download Region Maps link. Refer to the above listed manuals on how to use these downloaded maps. You will still use the Map Loader to install them.

**********

Q: How do I purchase Map Activation Keys?

A: Be sure you need to! If you own a national edition you already own the full maps for the USA. If the Map Loader shows a region as a choice to install in view/build basemap then you own it.

You can purchase maps directly through the map loader if you have an ActiveSync connection to a PC on the Internet. You do not need to deal with the activation keys since this will be automatically updated during the purchase.

You can purchase your map activation keys by visiting our online Map Store and clicking on Purchase Map Activation Key. Enter you Device ID and click on submit. Follow the steps accordingly and you will receive your activation code.

The map Activation key can be seen via the Map Loader. Be sure the unit is not hooked to ActiveSync and then choose Map Tools and Repair Activation Key to view the key.

**********

Q: I lost my Activation Key, how do I retrieve it?

A: If you are connected to ActiveSync on a PC that is on the Internet the Activation Key will be automatically downloaded when you run the Map Loader.

If you are not on the Internet you can retrieve your activation key in our Products & Services category under Map Store. Click on Show My Activation Keys.

Q: What colors are available for the WayPoint PDAs?

A: The 100 is available in Space Silver while the 200 is available in Midnight Blue, in keeping with its Bluetooth capability. The capabilites of the PDA's themselves are identical. Only the supplied accessories differentiate the products.

**********

Q: What are the lights on the front for?

A: The left light indicates that the unit is being charged. It quits blinking when the unit is fully charged. The middle light is a visual indication for an user set alarm. It is also used by WayPoint navigation to indicate an upcoming turn. The right light is for future use to indicate that wireless connections are enabled.

Q: Can I upgrade my WayPoint 100 to a WayPoint 200?

A: Yes, we will be offering an upgrade. Please contact Mobile Crossing for information on pricing or check the Outlet page. You only need a Compact Flash Bluetooth card and a Bluetooth cable GPS receiver. All of the software is already installed.

**********

Q: What is the screen size of the WayPoint PDA

A: 3.5" diagonal - 2.1" width x 2.8" height with 240 x 320 pixels.

***********

Q: Do POI's in WayPoint have phone numbers?

A: Yes, However, there is a limit on how may lines of data can be displayed. If you do not see the phone number go to map settings and turn off one of the items in the list such as Lat/Lon value.

************

Q: What is a map region?

A. WayPoint units are sold with a map region installed. A map region in the US is about 100 Megs of Maps and consists of about 2 to 5 states plus road maps for the entire country. These are generally preinstalled in the onboard map memory. More regions can be purchased as the user needs them. In some cases on the Long Haul (Major Roads) region will be installed.

*************

Q: How many map regions can I install?

A. You can install as many as you have memory for. They can be installed in your SD memory. You can have about 3 to 4 regions open at one time depending on how many maps the region contains. You can selectively turn off maps you don't need to enable maps for a trip that spans more regions.

**************

Q: What are (Long haul) road maps?

A: Long Haul maps cover the entire country and show freeways and major highways within each state. Each map covers one state. These can be used for routing and navigation when detailed maps are not needed. They also provide a method to load and unload individual county maps if these are installed on your unit. Tap the flower icon to reveal the name of the couty and then tap on hold on the county name to bring up a menu to load or unload the detailed county map.

Major Roads can be used with detail maps to generate routes for long distances. Just enable the needed Long Haul maps and the detailed maps at each end of the journey.

Q: How can I select a city or zip code without scrolling the whole list?

A: Tap the city box and then bring up the keyboard. Enter the starting letter for the city and then scroll from there. If the city is near the end of the letter list you might want to enter the next letter and scroll back instead. Enter # to get to the list of zip codes.

*****************

Q: How can I get really fast searches?

A: Limit the search window by providing a city name or zip code. For contacts provide a zip code in the contact database. Use the 25 mile radius feature, by setting the search origin before entering the search or route menu. Tap a spot on the screen somewhere close to the destination to bring up a description box. Tap and hold on the box to bring up a menu. Select "set search origin" from the menu. Unload maps you don't need.

***************

Q: Where can I find a screen protector to fit my WayPoint?

A: A screen protector we have used is the Writeshield P/N WSPDA011 from PocketPCTechs.com. It is 56+ x 75 mm. The one you want features anti-glare which is probably a more important feature for the WayPoint than the need for actual scratch protection.

***************

Q: How large an SD card can I use with my WayPoint?

A: You can use any card from 8 Meg to 1 GigaByte. A minimum of 128 Meg is required to load maps. It can be any brand you want. Cards above 1 Gig will not work at all in the SD slot.

***************

Q: I get an error in Map Loader about a corrupt file list. How do I fix it?

A: The corrupt index message is caused by a wrong level Map Loader on your unit. You probably own Version 2 maps but the Map Loader you have is for Version 1 and does not recognize these maps. The good news that it will automatically upgrade the version of Map Loader. Here is how.

  1. Make sure you have ActiveSync installed and have a connection to your pda. Also make sure the computer is on the Internet. Disable any firewalls.
  2. Now start the Map Loader. It should say checking for updates. It will find and update and offer to update the software. You must tap the update button within 3 seconds to perform the update. If you are not fast enough quit and try again
  3. After the update the problem will be resolved.

Q: My backlight shut off. How do I turn it back on?

A: Accidently turning off the backlight is usually caused by holding down the power switch for 4 to 5 seconds. This is actually intended as a feature to lower battery drain while listening to music. To avoid turning off the light just press the power button a short time. To get the backlight back on follow one of these steps.

  • If the PDA is on you might try holding the power button down for about 5 seconds. Sometimes this will turn the backlight back on.
  • Get some place where you can read the screen and tap th Start Menu > Settings > System > Backlight and tap the box where it says Turn on. This may need to be set for Battery power and for external power.
  • If you are on Battery power the light may be on but just very dim. If this is the case do the same steps as the previous case except that when you get to the backlight page you will need to slide the Backlight bar to the right to make the screen brighter. A brighter screen will reduce battery life.

Q: Where is the Gismo backup program?

A: It preloaded in the last couple of versions of the ROM image hence Gismo is instantly available in the program folder but it is also available in the Rom image you have. Here is how to set it up:

  1. Start File Explorer
  2. Traverse to the \Windows folder
  3. Bring up the Keyboard and tap the letter G.
  4. You can tap it a few more times or just scroll until you see a file beginning with Gismo ...
  5. Tap the Gismo file to install it.

You will now find Gismo in the programs folder.
